GEM STONE CARVING ART
The art of gemstone carving is one of the most ancient forms of Decorative and Applied Arts. In some cultural centres such as Central America and China, the gem stone carving traditions have existed for thousands of years. Later, in about 700-800 B.C., the gem stone processing started on the Continent, in ancient Greece and other countries of the Mediterranean area. Like many other forms of art, a gem stone carving flourished at the Renaissance winning a recognition in all largest countries of West in course of time. At the beginning of the 18th century gemstone carving appeared in Russia and after two years, owing to the activity of Karl Faberge company, the art obtained its classical form.
The 20th century became an epoch of shocking cataclysms, disasters and collapses for the world. During this century the mentality of man was constantly changing and his views on multitude of surrounding phenomena were changing accordingly.

THE GODFATHER OF GEM STONE CARVING ART

It is obvious that the image, which a gem stone carving art still has, was formed by Karl Faberge more than one hundred years ago. Following the activity of this outstanding jeweler, a hard coloured stone was appreciated at its true worth in the majority of civilized countries of the world. In spite of the fact that Karl Faberge’s company was mostly engaged in a work with precious metals, this name is associated with a gem stone carving among the most of people.

THE DEVELOPMENT OF TRADITIONS
In the beginning the process of the revival of lost gem stone carving craft was based on the heritage left by Karl Faberge. Many artists in their young years perfected their skills making different replicas of that time which provoked an intense interest on the antique market. However, in a few years numerous authors’ objects of St.Petersburg carvers appeared. These works were a further development of the style created by Karl Faberge. The objects impressed the audience favourably and many collectors started to buy these works for their collections…
